Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of flying to Melbourne to attend the national gala for the Australian Web Awards. We've attended every web awards since their inception, and it's always a great event. Surrounded by passionate web folk, these are a great reflection on how many in our industry work together to create a cohesive, friendly environment where those who do outstanding work are celebrated in a fun environment.

The judges have a hard job - more than a dozen experts from various fields work tirelessly to whittle the projects submitted down to scores, based on a plethora of requirements. You can view the finalists and winners for each of the categories on the Australian Web Awards website.

We are very humbled and extremely proud to say that we became finalists (an honour in itself) and winners (unbelievably exciting!) for the following work

Education
Perth College (finalist)

Innovation
Taylor Robinson (finalist)

Culture & Events
Perth International Comedy Festival (winner)

Not for Profit
FOODcents (winner)

Then it came time to announce the 'Most Outstanding' award. This is to recognise the best of the best in all of the submissions made this year. We were beyond flattered to find two out of the three finalist positions being our work.

FOODcents (winner)

Perth International Comedy Festival (finalist)

So what helps a website win a gong? Firstly it's the attention to detail; not only should the site look visually appealing, much of what is judged is 'under the hood'. The code needs to be well crafted, meaning it is developed to be accessible by a wide audience - those with visual and physical disabilities included. The content needs to be well written and displayed semantically and overall, the site needs to have the 'polish' that is hard for a client to spot.

Secondly, and most importantly, the project needs the right client relationship - a relationship of trust and engagement, where we work in tandem with our clients to create great work. Without the right client qualities, we don't get the opportunity to craft a fantastic website.

We're pleased as punch to win these awards, however we believe that we equally share the glory with our fantastic clients, who allow us to work so hard on their projects, who give us the freedom to make suggestions and drive the production of the projects, and who trust us to create engaging online experiences for them.

These awards are equally the recognition of the teams at Perth College, Taylor Robinson, Perth International Comedy Festival and FOODcents as they are ours. Thank you.
