EPISODE 45

Episode Highlights

Reducing Inauthentic Activity on Instagram

  • Instagram has noticed an increasing number of third-party apps which artificially grow audiences and they want to reduce this to encourage real experiences (But really, if it’s on Instagram, how real is it?)

  • Starting the 19th Nov Instagram will begin removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity

  • Instagram has built machine learning tools to help identify accounts that use those services

  • Accounts they identify using those services will receive an in-app message alerting them Instagram has removed the authentic likes, follows and comments

  • To stop this from continuing, Instagram will ask you to change your password so the third party apps can’t access your account

Selfies with Stan Lee: is this grief or #me-me-me?

  • In the wake of the passing of Stan Lee, celebrities posted selfies with the creator and    Armie Hammer tweeted: So touched by all of the celebrities posting pictures of themselves with Stan Lee. No better way to commemorate an absolute legend than putting up a picture of yourself.

  • This caused a massive backlash, to which Hamer has recently apologised. He said he’s going to work on Twitter Impulse Control.

  • But does he raise a valid point? Sure, it’s a way for people to express their grief, but perhaps a selfie with Stan Lee (for those lucky enough to have such a memory) is simply a way to share their grief.

  • Hammer suggested: If Stan impacted your life (ie. All of our lives) with his work, post his work that touched you the most. Posting a selfie makes his death about you and how cool you felt taking a picture with him.
